When choosing rug sizes for a common area such as a living room, designers recommend selecting a rug that’s 6 to 8 inches wider than your sofa on both sides. If you have a large living room, you can place your accent chairs, sofa, and coffee table all on the rug as long as you have about 8 inches between the edges of the furniture and the rug to avoid looking crowded. You also can place only the front legs of the chairs and the sofa on a large area rug in the living room to make the room feel more spacious.
